Company Backgrounder

Taleblank is an online, text-based, asynchronous role-playing game (RPG).

Traditional RPGs require a group of friends to all be available for the same 3+ hours, on a regular basis such as weekly, fortnightly, or monthly.

For many people, life gets in the way, and months or even years go by between sessions.

Taleblank provides an alternative. No mutual availability is required. Instead, each player takes their turn at a convenient time for them.

The game has been designed from the ground up for asynchronous play, so that the experience is as good as can be.

Management/Staff Bios

Taleblank is the brainchild of a busy father of two, whose Dungeons & Dragons group is comprised exclusively of working parents. As such, mutual availability is limited.

He wanted an asynchronous role playing experience, but one that was streamlined and user friendly, and which did as much of the work for him as possible.

Unsatisfied with the existing offerings, he set out to create his own game.

The result is Taleblank.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is it narrative or crunchy? Narrative
  • Can characters die? Yes — and they can continue to influence the story from beyond the grave
  • Why not just play-by-post, or play-by-forum? PBP and PBF have been around for years, but they typically take an existing RPG (which was designed for synchronous play) and slow it down to the speed of molasses by playing it asynchronously. Taleblank was designed from the ground up to be asynchronous, meaning that each turn meaningfully advances the story with no friction or delay.
  • What type of stories does it encourage? Taleblank is setting-agnostic, and scenario-agnostic. That said, it features a party dynamic system inspired by “buddy” films. You know, she's by the book, he's a rule breaker. As a result, the system works best for one-shots rather than ongoing sagas.
  • Why isn't it free? Because our time isn't free, our servers aren't free, and we don't want to sell your attention to advertisers. We believe that if Taleblank adds value to your life, it's worth paying for.
  • What's your tech stack? We use end-to-end Typescript, Svelte for the front-end, AWS Lambda for the backend, and ArangoDB for our database.
  • Do you have a manifesto? Absolutely.
  • Can I see what it looks like without starting a game? Sure can. Check out the how to play guide for a detailed overview.
